The Garage-Mahal Story:

During our engagement, my (now) wife and I were looking for our first home. We weren’t satisfied with the homes that were on the market during this time so our realtor showed us a couple of homes that were built in a new subdivision. Happy with what we saw, we decided to build our house. One of the main selling points for me was the fact that this development was designed to allow homeowners to build additional garages. At that time, my wife and I owned 4 vehicles, so having this option available to us was a relief.

Construction of the Garage-Mahal started in September 2005. I researched various styles of garages in books, magazines, the internet, and by driving around the area where we live. The garage I chose is a mixture of a design I saw in a book and my own. It incorporates most of the key elements of our house, which is a bonus room above the parking area and similar roof pitches.

 The building measures 36’wide x 30’ deep. Due to set-back restrictions and utility placement, it is as large as I can make it. In order to match the house, I used the same siding, windows, shingles and doors. We also mirrored our landscaping to match the house as well. Although not installed, I have the same exterior light fixture that we used on the house. My hope is that when people drive by, they think the house and detached garage were built at the same time.
